If you’ve ever had a dream with a snake in it, you may wonder, “Are all snake dreams about sex?” According to Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, “Yes.” However, many dream interpreters believe there are many more meanings for snake dreams than that they’re about sex. Therefore, if you’ve had a snake dream, read on for some possible interpretations that may surprise you.

What is your first thought as you awaken after a snake dream? That is, after you get over having that kind of dream? For many people it’s, “Are snake dreams good or bad?” That’s because they want to know if their snake dream means something good or bad for them and their life.

All right, I know that the snake symbol turns up rather frequently in dreams. And, I know that even though many people don’t especially like snakes, in dreams, snake dreams can even symbolize many good things such as spirituality . . . for some people. In this article, I’ll discuss certain kinds of snake dreams and certain kinds of people for whom snake dreams can be good.

I notice that I have a lot of dreams that involve water.

Well, guess what? According to my favorite dream interpretation author Gillian Holloway, PhD, water in dreams is probably the most common dream symbol. In her The Complete Dream Book, she says that even people who are not knowledgeable about dream interpretation notice that their dreams often include:

“… floods, lakes and tidal waves.”

Whew, I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Dream Interpretation: Baiyou

In yesterday’s dream, I described a dream in which a house was almost surrounded by water in a bog. In that dream, the word “Baiyou” came up as a description of the swampy, lush-with-vegetation area.

“Baiyou” sounds like “Bye-you,” as in “Good-bye, you.” As it turns out, the dreamer is saying good-bye to a beloved relationship–her daughter is getting married. The person is not leaving, but the relationship between mother and daughter is changing.

As a dear old friend used to say, “Change is deadly,” and this change is definitely challenging. It feels to the mother as if she is losing her daughter.

Dream Interpretation: Giving Birth

I recently talked with a young woman who had dreamed of giving birth. She wondered what the dream interpretation for giving birth might be. By the way, she is not pregnant, therefore, the dream is not her psyche going through a dry run of the birth. Here is an excerpt from one interpretation I found online. Since I have had similar dreams over the years, after a day when I was excited about a new creative project, I am not surprised to see the following dream interpretation under “Birth:”

To dream of giving birth or see someone else giving birth, suggests that you are giving birth to a new idea or project. It also represents a new attitude, fresh beginnings or a major event. Alternatively, the dream may be calling attention to your inner child and the potential for you to grow.
