NASA surveys asteroids to see which are potentially hazardous

Orbit Comparison between Near Earth and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids

Orbit Comparison: This diagram illustrates the differences between orbits of a typical near-Earth asteroid (blue) and a potentially hazardous asteroid, or PHA (orange). PHAs are a subset of the near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). They have the closest orbits to Earth’s orbit, coming within 5 million miles (about 8 million kilometers), and they are large enough to survive passage through Earth’s atmosphere and cause damage on a regional, or greater, scale. JPL/NASA public domain image.

NASA conducted a survey to determine which asteroids are potentially hazardous to earth. NASA scientists discovered that, in comparison with near-earth asteroids, the potentially hazardous asteroids are brighter and therefore more likely composed of hard rock, such as granite, or metal.

The potentially hazardous asteroids pass closer to earth than near-earth asteroids and are considered large enough to survive passage through the earth’s atmosphere. That’s why they’re labelled potentially hazardous.

Asteroids with lower-inclination orbits would be more likely to encounter Earth and would be easier to reach. The results therefore suggest more near-Earth objects might be available for future robotic or human missions.

NASA Survey counts potentially hazardous asteroids

None of the potentially hazardous asteroids are slated to hit earth on December 21, 2012, as far as I can tell. It appears that the end of the world on December 21, 2012 will not occur because of an asteroid impact with earth. However, near-earth asteroid 2007 PA8 did pass within 17 times the distance between the earth and moon in November (last month).

People are buying the End of the World 2012 EBook–Yay!

I’m so excited again, because I received posts on my Facebook page (Facebook.com/CarolChapman8) that a couple of people had bought my  End of the World 2012 Kindle Ebook.  That makes me feel soooo good, because I spent years videotaping the content for the End of the World 2012 movie and editing it, and interviewing people, and travelling in Yucatan, because I want people to know the truth about 2012. And then I worked hard some more and made the information in the movie into an ebook and a paperback book. There is so much misinformation out there! I didn’t go through all this trouble just to say, “Well, there, I did it.” I did it to communicate with others. This morning I received a Facebook post saying:

Hi Carol, just finished reading End of the World 2012 E Book. Really enjoyed it, interesting to get the correct facts about the Maya Long Calender. Thanks for a truthful perspective on 2012 !

That makes me feel very happy! If you’re interested, here’s a link to the Amazon listing of the End of the World 2012 Kindle Ebook.

Possible Atlantis-destroying volcano swelling with magna

Santorini volcano in the Aegean Sea NASA satellite image

Santorini Volcano in the Aegean Sea, seen in this NASA satellite image, was the site of one of the largest eruptions in the last 10,000 years. The explosion of the volcano removed so much magma from below the Earth that the volcano collapsed, producing a large crater, or caldera.

The Island of Santorini has risen 5.5 inches in the last year and a half according to an article published September 9th in the journal Nature Geoscience leading to speculation that the volcano on Santorini may be getting ready to erupt again. On average, the Santorini volcano has a major eruption about every 10,000 years. The last major eruption, 3,600 years ago, created 40-foot high tsunamis and led to the destruction of the Minoan civilization. Some believe this historical eruption led to the legend of Atlantis since Plato said Atlantis went down in the ocean.

In the past 1.5 years, the magma chamber beneath the volcano island has ballooned by as much as 350 million cubic feet (20 million cubic meters), or up to 15 times the size of London’s Olympic Stadium.

Humorous and sad Atlantis comment

I like this clever blog post on the subject of the lost continent of Atlantis:

Lost City of Atlantis Not Found Again

Once [a] year someone is claiming to be on the trail of Atlantis, a science-fiction in which super-smart people from the past were somehow wiped out and took a whole lot of cool technology with them.

Science 2.1

I like the humor. Even in the time I’ve been keeping this blog, Atlantis has been “found” in so many places.

However, I do feel sad that the general idea of Atlantis is that it was populated by super-smart people who got wiped out, especially since we consider ourselves super-smart people and we have a whole lot of cool technology. It makes you wonder . . .

Could Doggerland have been Atlantis?

According to an online CBS News – Science article, the underwater land between England and France as well as the land between Scotland and Denmark, were above water until about 5,500 BC. At that time, rising sea levels and a tsunami submerged all of the land except for the remaining British Isles.

Dr. Richard Bates, geophysicist at St. Andrews University in Scotland, says that the now-submerged land provided food for both hunters and gatherers. What’s really exciting is that:

Among fossilized evidence of mammoths and large game animals, divers have found harpoons, flint tools and suspected burial sites they say belonged to residents of the submerged settlement more than 12,000 years ago.

More on the Lost City of Atlantis or What? Doggerland? Submerged off the coast of Scotland

Oil and gas companies searching for fuel below the seafloor are coming up with evidence of a land that was once above water.

For years, fishermen have been dredging up bones in the North Sea.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that geophysicist Richard Bates of the Department of Earth Sciences in St. Andrews, Scotland and his research team are finding promising clues of:

“. . . what may be burial sites, stone monuments, and even mass mammoth graves, which would be evidence of ice age hunting.”

Lost City of Atlantis found between Scotland and Denmark

OK, maybe not the lost city of Atlantis, or, maybe it is. It is an ancient land submerged by the sea, formerly the home of woolly mammoths. Scientists are studying the lost land of Doggerland:

After a 15-year project to unearth the truth about Doggerland, its history has finally been pieced together through painstaking analysis of the bottom of the sea and artefacts brought up from the depths. It was a huge strip of land situated between Scotland and Denmark that existed between 18,000 and 5,500 years BC before being swallowed up by the sea.

Carol Chapman speaks on Atlantis in Toronto

I’m going to be speaking in Toronto, Canada, next Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. It will be an all-day event lasting from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Following, please find an outline of the event:

Atlantis and Its Colonies in Egypt and Yucatan

Atlantis and Its Colonies in Egypt and Yucatan is a day-long event organized into four sessions. Throughout, I will be showing a Powerpoint Presentation that includes photographs of my research in Egypt and Yucatan.

1st Morning Session: The Location of Atlantis. In this session, we will look at:

  • The many places that are supposed to be Atlantis
  • Edgar Cayce’s psychic readings on the location of Atlantis
  • The world during Atlantean times according to Cayce

2nd Morning Session: The Strange People of Atlantis. This session includes three main topics:

  • Overview of the types of entities, since Atlanteans were not all human beings
  • A timeline, showing the progression of the types of entities over time
  • Images of the different kinds of Atlanteans painted on the pharaohs’ tombs

1st Afternoon Session: The Atlantean Migration to Egypt and Yucatan. In this session, we will examine the following themes:

  • Why the Atlanteans migrated
  • The Atlantean modes of transporation
  • Images of Atlantean transportation in Egypt (the pharaohs’ tombs) and Yucatan (carvings in Mayan ruins)

2nd Afternoon Session: The Search for Evidence of Atlantis includes three areas that Edgar Cayce’s psychic readings identified as locations where the Atlanteans left records of their civilization and information on their power source, the mighty crystal:

  • The Bimini Islands off the East Coast of Florida
  • Egypt, by the Great Sphinx
  • Yucatan—controversy over two possible locations

At the end of each session, there will be time for a question/answer period.

For more information and to register for the event, please click here.

Hope to see you there!
