In researching near earth asteroid 433 Eros and its possible impact on the 2012 end of the world predictions, I came upon this very interesting information:
Its approximate diameters are 40 x 14 x 14 km making it the second largest planet-crosser and larger than the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos.
The Near Earth Asteroid Mission to 433 Eros
This interests me because it makes the outrageous claim that an asteroid, in this case 433 Eros, is larger than the moons of Mars: Phobos and Deimos.
That’s amazing! I vaguely remember reading something years ago that Phobos and Deimos are so small and light in weight that there has been some speculation by people who think “outside the box” that they could be satellites left by an extinct civilization or the abandoned spaceships of extraterrestrials.

Here’s more information on the near earth asteroid 433 Eros that some people think might be the cause of the 2012 end of the world prophecies. Some people think that 433 Eros might collide with earth in 2012 when its orbit is close to earth.
433 Eros, discovered in 1898 by G. Witt, was the first asteroid discovered to cross within the orbit of Mars and to approach that of Earth.
However, if you click through to the above UCLA paper, which is about a spacecraft sent to bring back information about Eros, you’ll find a diagram of Eros’ orbit relative to the earth. Even when Eros is closest to the earth, it is very far away.

Yesterday, I quoted an excerpt from a blog that said that 433 Eros, a Near Earth Asteroid, would pass close to earth on January 31, 2012. The blog writer wondered if this close encounter might lead to a collision and be the cause of the end of the world 2012 predictions.
Here’s an excerpt from an official NASA site that says that, not only has Eros already passed close to the earth many times, but it will NOT collide with the Earth in 2012 or any other time.
The closest approach of Eros to Earth in the 20th century was on January 23, 1975, at approximately 0.15 AU (14 million miles/22 million kilometers). Previous close approaches occurred in 1901 at 0.32 AU (30 million miles/48 million kilometers) and in 1931 at 0.17 AU (16 million miles/26 million kilometers). Because of its repeated close encounters with Earth, Eros has been an important object historically for refining the mass of the Earth-moon system and the value of the astronomical unit. Eros is no threat to actually hit the Earth, however.

Have your heard about this Near Earth Asteroid 433 Eros? Some people think an Eros collision with earth in 2012 will cause the predicted “end of the world” in 2012, for example, in this excerpt from a blogpost:
Is this the Asteriod 433 Eros, the first discovered Near-Earth asteroid, smashing through our atmospere? Eros is one of the few NEAs with a maximum diameter greater than 10 km. It is believed to be larger than the impactor that created Chicxulub Crater in the Yucatán, which has been linked to the Apocalypse (extinction) of the dinosaurs.
On January 31, 2012, Eros is expected to pass Earth, Is this the 2012 Apocalypse??
The article goes on to say that:
Objects in an orbit like Eros can exist for only a few hundred million years before the orbit is perturbed by gravitational interactions. Simulations suggest that Eros may evolve into an Earth-crosser with Apocalyptic power.
What do you think? Does 433 Eros have the capability of becoming an “Apocalyptic Power?”

I received emails in reply to yesterday’s post. Following please find summaries:
Because I’m a person who tends to look with fear at predictions – my own and others’- I like to do research to find the rational core behind prophecies and to dispel the sensationalism created by commercial interests. So, let’s take a look at 2012 and the research of the eminent author on indigenous peoples of the Americas, Frank Waters.
Frank Waters, 1902 – 1995, is probably best known for his monumental work, The Book of the Hopi, which is considered by many to be the definitive collection of stories, language, rituals and photographs of the Hopi. Waters wrote this book in 1963 aided by thirty-two Hopi elders. It is a wonderful record because, since that time, some of the Hopi traditions have not been carried forward to the next generation.
In 1970, Waters was given a Rockefeller Foundation grant to research the pre-Columbian culture and religion of the Toltecs, Aztecs, and Maya in Mexico and Guatemala. From this came his book Mexico Mystique: the Coming Sixth World of Consciousness, published in 1975.
In Mexico Mystique, Waters discusses the date for the beginning of our present world, the fifth, on August 12, 3113 B.C. He shows the great difficulty in correlating with our calendar the Mayan date of 13.0.0.0.0 for the beginning of the fifth world. Over the years of scholarly translation the date has gone from August 29, 3511 B.C. to October 14, 3373 B.C. to 3340 B.C. to 2853 B.C. to finally 3113 B.C.
Do you get my point? Who knows what the beginning date of the fifth world really is! This date is important because, from it, the beginning of the next world, the sixth, was calculated by the ancient Maya. If our correlation of the beginning date of the fifth world is wrong, the beginning date of the sixth world will be wrong also.
Based on the understanding of scholars prior to 1975 when Waters’ Mexico Mystique came out, the beginning of the next world – the sixth – would be on . . . (are you ready for this?) . . . December 24, 2011! That’s’ right, 2011. And, December 24, not 21. One year earlier than the present prediction of 2012! Who knows, with further scholarly research, what that date may become in the near future? For all we know, it may have already passed.
When I interviewed Maya people during my visit to Yucatan in January 2008 and asked them, “What do you know about December 21, 2012?” they replied that this was a date that white people had told them based on translations of ancient Mayan texts. Basically, the ancient traditions have not continued to the present generation of Maya, or anyway, not to ordinary people going about ordinary lives.
There’s a chance that shamans may keep the tradition going, but in no way is 2012 common knowledge among the Maya as was the millennium to many people throughout the earth.
I find it comforting to know that among everyday Maya there is no panic about 2012.

As I said earlier, Izamna is the great god of the Maya. Do you know that he was the "bearded one?" Amazingly, in a civilization of beardless men, Izamna had a beard. He evidently came from the East. I wonder, was he from Atlantis?
One of the great mysteries around Izamna, is that he disappeared from one of the Yucatan’s most sacred places, the island of Cozumel.
I wonder, was Izamna’s disappearance in any way associated with 2012? For example, could he have left on a day associated with the Long Count Calendar that is similar to the projected 2012? Each of the Mayan days have a prophesied meaning similar to the way our days are associated with a different planet, i.e. Sunday is the Sun’s Day and can be considered in mythological tradition to be a powerful day.
Somewhere I read that when Izamna left, he was carried away on a serpent boat. Has anyone else read something like this? Please comment if you have.

In a July 29, 2008 blog post, Juan Valdez says he’s presently in Guatemala. He contemplates going north into the Mexican state of Chiapas.
I am thinking of going north into Chiapas in Mexico but am not sure I will learn much more about the Maya Long Count and the 2012 cataclysm being forecast by some, because less than 25% of the inhabitants of the province are of Maya decent and most of them don’t even speak Spanish.
The reason I find this excerpt interesting is that, based on my reading, I thought that the inhabitants of Chiapas were especially dedicated to preserving their culture. In addition, I’d read that many of the Mayan people, continued to dress in colorful traditional outfits decorated with local designs, are especially reluctant to be treated as fodder for tourists’ cameras.
I guess I assumed this meant that the state of Chiapas was a Mayan stronghold. But, what do I know? I’m just reading and this fellow is there. What does he mean by saying that most of them don’t even speak Spanish? That they speak only Mayan and therefore he can’t converse with them so why go to Chiapas, anyway? Or, that they speak English and therefore aren’t in touch with their Mayan roots so they wouldn’t know anything about the Maya Long Count Calendar or 2012?
Something else I found interesting–further in his blog he says that because he’s in the mountains in Guatemala, it’s cool. Amazing! I’m sitting in Virginia where it’s very hot but we’re so much farther north than Guatemala.

I’ve written about James O’Dea before. He’s the one who says about 2012, “You were born for such a time as this.” I love it.
In the midst of proclamations of either great spiritual awakening or extinction, here comes a man who says that whatever may come, you chose to be born now to experience this whatever it may be.
This is similar to the information that came through in my hypnosis sessions–that the Golden Ones had chosen long ago in Atlantis to reincarnate now to be of help as we go through these times of transformation.

Walter Quinone, author of Ancient Mayan Prophecies, says that the Aztecs inherited their calendar from the Maya. But the Maya did not say they were the originators of their calendar. Indeed, they said that their calendar had come to them from beings in their far, distant past.
Where these beings from the Mayas’ far, distant past aliens? Were they Atlanteans? What do you think?
