Atlantis and its Colonies in Egypt and Yucatan

Today I enjoyed putting together a summary of a speaking event I’ve given before called, “Atlantis and its Colonies in Egypt and Yucatan,” except, in the past, I only included Egypt. I am happy to be including Yucatan since I’ve traveled to Yucatan four times to videotape footage for my travelogue: Yucatan Travel: Cancun to Chichen Itza. I will be giving the Atlantis and its Colonies in Egypt and Yucatan day-long seminar on Saturday, April 21st, 2012, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. More details to follow.

Blog comments fueled the Julie and Julia movie

Today I saw the movie Julie and Julia about Julia Child and a young woman named Julie Powell who wrote a blog about cooking the over 500 recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. In the movie, Julie Powell wonders if anyone is reading her blog. Then, she begins to receive comments.

I like it when I receive comments on this blog. When I look up the statistics for this blog, there have been up 79,000 hits per month here. So, I know someone is reading the blog. I would enjoy hearing from more readers. But are people who are interested in the lost city of Atlantis chatty?

Atlantis was a Maritime Civilization all over the world

A YouTube video entitled The Lost Continent of Atlantis includes an interview with Graham Hancock of Fingerprints of the Gods fame. In the video, Hancock says that he believe Atlantis was a Maritime civilization that settled along many of the coastlines of the world. At the end of the Ice Age around 12,500 B.C., when the ice melted, these coastal settlements became submerged. In Hancock’s opinion, therefore, Atlantean ruins will be found underwater all over the world. He sites both Mediterrean and eastern Atlantic Ocean ruins as examples of likely Atlantean sites.

Was Present-day Israel Atlantis?

According to the Wikipedia article entitled, “Location Hypotheses of Atlantis,” Jaime Manuschevich believes that Atlantis was located in the territory that “today corresponds to Israel and Sinai.”

The article goes on to say that:

Atlantean civilization corresponds to the Natufian peoples, the first food-producing people, whose main political and harbor center was Jericho. These people lived in the region in the dates established by Plato (11,600 BC).

Was Atlantis in the Mediterranean Sea?

From my point of view, it does not make sense that Atlantis would have been in the Mediterranean Sea since Atlantis is almost the same word as Atlantic. Therefore, I would expect it to be in the Atlantic Ocean.
Atlantis is not called, “Mediterranea.”
However, I see that a very informative Wikipedia article called, “Location Hypotheses of Atlantis,” lists about 12 locations in the Mediterranean from Andalusia to Troy.

A Children’s book on Atlantis

Front Cover of Atlantis: The Legend of a Lost City

Front Cover of Atlantis: The Legend of a Lost City from the Amazon listing

How lovely, a children’s book on Atlantis. It’s called Atlantis: The Legend of a Lost City. It describes the legend of the lost city of Atlantis … about the sea god Poseidon, his wife Cleito, and their children: five sets of twins. Author Christina Balit. Richly, colorfully, and boldly illustrated, the book makes a lovely introduction to Plato’s legend of the lost city of Atlantis for early readers or for reading out loud .

Was the submerged land in the North Atlantic exposed during the Ice Age?

So, was the underwater land off the west coast of the Orkney-Shetland Islands exposed during the last Ice Age? As I wrote yesterday, according to Professor Arysio Santos, author of Atlantis: The Lost Continent Finally Found, at the end of the last Ice Age, some 11,600 years ago, sea level was 500 feet lower than it is now. Therefore, many of the lands that are currently underwater, were above sea level at that time.

I consulted the Mail Online article I wrote about in my July 19th posting to see how deep underwater the submerged land was off the west of the Orkney-Shetland Islands. And, it is too deep to qualify for Atlantis according to Prof. Santos’ theories.

The 1.2mile-deep landscape is located in the North Atlantic west of the Orkney-Shetland Islands and has peaks that once belonged to mountains and eight major rivers.

Atlantis covered with rising seas rather than going down due to earthquakes

In his book Atlantis: The Lost Continent Finally Found author Professor Arysio Santos points out that in 11,600 B.C., around the time Plato said Atlantis existed, and at the end of the last ice age, the sea level was 500 feet lower than it is today. That is because much more of the water on earth was bound up in ice than it is now. Professor Santos concludes that Atlantis had to be in present-day Indonesia in the South China Sea since there is submerged land there that would have been above sea level at the end of the last ice age.

Was Atlantis in Europe or in the Atlantic Ocean?

The recent “sort-of Atlantis” find in Spain–satellite images showed buried concentric circles of ruins reminiscent of Plato’s description of the lost city of Atlantis–beg the question: Was Atlantis in Europe?

Professor Freund, who headed the map-making excursion in Spain, says there’s more to indicate these ruins, which have not be excavated yet, could be Atlantis. A TampaBay.com article says:

Greek philosopher Plato wrote that Atlantis, the shining capital of an ancient civilization, was surrounded by rings of harbors near the Pillars of Hercules, now known as the Straits of Gibraltar. It sank into the sea in one day, he wrote.
USF Professor digs into ancient secrets like lost city of Atlantis

Since the concentric circles are in Spain, they are near the Pillars of Hercules. But wait, I always thought that when Plato said, “near the Pillars of Hercules,” he meant on the Atlantic Ocean side of the present-day Straits of Gibraltar, not on the Mediterranean Sea side.

The Straits of Gibraltar (Pillars of Hercules) create a gate between the Mediterranean Sea (plus Europe and Africa), and the wide open Atlantic Ocean, which is where I always thought Atlantis used to be. Out in the ocean between present-day Europe/Africa and the Americas, not in Europe/Africa.
